JonesDBR worked with Hanbury (previously Hanbury Evans Wright Vlattas + Company) on the design for the Baylor University – East Village Residential Community which includes two separate 4-story residential buildings as well as a 2-story, 30,000 sf dining hall. This represents a major project on a university campus. The East Village is a lively residential district with dining at its center, clearly linked to Baylor’s rich past but is mindful of a bright future. Its additional beds move the University closer to its goal of housing 50 percent of the student body on campus, and it establishes a vital and dynamic center for student interaction.

The Baylor University project within the University’s East Campus precinct, referred to as the East Village, includes three new buildings and coordination/connection to existing campus utilities. JonesDBR provided MEP, Technology/Security, and Energy Modeling Services for Phase I which will house 600-700 students. The U-shaped buildings are organized to create a series of semi-private courtyards and pedestrian connections, while the dining facility and chapel frame public park/plaza spaces.

This facility was constructed on the edge of an existing campus so existing utilities were extended to the new site as part of this project. The facility includes an energy-efficient variable air volume mechanical system, utilizing a campus chilled water and a campus steam system. The project is LEED Certified.

The East Village Dining Commons addresses the university’s need to consolidate dining venues on the core campus, and to relieve pressure on existing dining venues. The facility visually interacts with its exterior spaces, drawing up to 500 diners. Exterior dining terraces are provided at the second floor on the south and west sides of the building. A retail component includes a convenience store and bakery.
